Remote Power Plant Generates 350 Megawatts by Choosing NEL Hydrogen Generators
A client’s two GE 7FA Gas Turbines, which are mounted on two floating barges, required reliable hydrogen generation. Two of our S40 Hydrogen Generators were packaged into a 20-foot long container and shipped as a completed unit. The hydrogen generation equipment was then installed on land close to the power plant. Hydrogen is piped onto the barges into the electrical generators to provide the required cooling.
The Challenge
At this particular location, there is an extreme shortage of third-party suppliers of hydrogen to meet their local gas demand. The plant was seeking a reliable source of hydrogen for their operation and was exhausted with the constant troubleshooting on problems related to gas their delivery. The plant staff lacked knowledge about how to best fit a generator for their process, so they reached out to our NEL Hydrogen Generation team for a consultation and formal quotation process. The client’s country has an extreme shortage of 3rd party suppliers of hydrogen; after seeking our services they determined installing two S40 Hydrogen Generators would be sufficient to keep the two GE 7FA Gas Turbine Generator packages operational.
The Solution
Two S40 Hydrogen Generators were provided and needed to keep the two GE 7FA Gas Turbine Generator packages operational at the plant site. Our recommended gas generation solutions worked very well, and the team was able to educate the customers during the entire process successfully. We provided the necessary support related to the installation of the equipment, which included installing into a container and field support during the startup of the equipment. Our client was very pleased with making the decision to switch to on-site gas generation. We’re pleased to include that there have been no power outages due to a problem with their equipment to date.
The Benefits
- Our NEL Hydrogen Generation team helped support the installation.
- Field assistance was provided during the startup of the equipment.
- No outages were required during the installation, and no outages have been reported due to any problems with this equipment.
- No more hassles and troubleshooting problems with required gas delivery.
Power Plant Saves $2.3 Million Annually with a NEL Hydrogen Generator
One third of our client’s country population rely on electricity from their Power Plant, so it’s crucial that their station effectively and efficiently meets this demand. In an attempt to generate electricity in a safer and more economical way, the plant replaced its stored hydrogen supply with an on-site hydrogen generator.
The Challenge
The electric power plant relied on its stored hydrogen to supply its two 450 MW generators with enough hydrogen gas to cool them. This meant maintaining a hydrogen tank with 75,000 scf of hydrogen gas at a refill cost of $8,625 per mo
nth. In addition to this high expense, the deliveries also took three to four days. If the hydrogen-cooled plant ran out of hydrogen, or there was an issue with the hydrogen tank, it threatened to shut down the turbine-generators disrupting one third of the country’s critical electricity supply.
The Solution
NEL Hydrogen Generation H-Series industrial hydrogen gas generators that only require water and a small amount of electricity were introduced to produce ultrapure hydrogen gas on-site. This eliminated the client’s needs for their risky, burdensome, and high-cost storage and management of the hydrogen gas tanks. Plus, they chose NEL Hydrogen Generation StableFlow® hydrogen control systems to manage the gas purity, dew point and pressure to maximize their generating efficiency.
The Benefits
- NEL’s hydrogen generator saved the Power Plant more than $2.3 million each year!
- Improved gas purity helped the station produce more than 5715 MW/hrs of additional electricity per year.
- On-site generation enabled the Power Plant to remove its hydrogen storage tanks, which was an explosive equivalent of 5,585 lbs. of TNT!
